Richard “Dick” William Wilson
MARQUETTE, MI – Richard “Dick” William Wilson, age 71, of 1710 West Ave. Marquette entered eternal life on Friday March 1, 2013 at his home. He was in the loving care of his family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
Dick was born May 22, 1941 in Port Huron, MI the son of the late Elmer and Ruth Rose (nee Marciniak) Wilson. He was a graduate of the Port Huron High School, Class of 1959. Dick then enlisted in the United States Air Force in July of 1959 and was stationed in Alaska working as a Russian Linguist. After his military service he attended Alpena Community College studying political science.
Dick married Kathleen Marie Sherey of Alpena, MI on May 29, 1965. He worked for Retail Credit Co. as an Insurance Investigator, later was offered a job as an Assistance Payment Worker at the Department of Social Services in Alpena. Dick also worked part-time as a referee for hockey at the Mich-Ke-Wis Park while in Alpena, MI. He was promoted to the position of Auditor and transferred to D.S.S. in Marquette, MI, working for 13 years for the State of Michigan and retired in 1987.
Dick played a significant role in Marquette County, receiving various awards including volunteer of the year. He served on the board of directors at Pregnancy Services for several years. After his retirement from the state he was a guardian/ conservator rep/payee along with volunteer transporter, with a case load up to 24 clients. He unselfishly took care of his wards up till his very last days, with the majority of his cases being “pro bono”. Richard had a fascination with the law and was very articulate in everything he did. In 1992 he was instrumental in pursuing a legal action on behalf of one of his wards which ended up becoming a published case in the Michigan Court of Appeals.
Dick was involved with many agencies throughout the Upper Peninsula such as the Dept. of Human Services, the Marquette School District, Probate Court, Pregnancy Services, The Salvation Army and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He enjoyed the outdoors, fly fishing, photography, bird watching, and golf. He was a member of the Wawonowin Country Club for many years and had served on its board of directors. He was also a member of the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Marquette and enjoyed attending Sunday Mass.
Survivors include his wife Kathleen Wilson of Marquette, three children Tanya (Perry) Lund of Gladstone, MI, Kelly (David) Rumney of DeWitt, MI, and Gary (Melissa) Wilson of Marquette, a brother Charlie Wilson of Sacramento, CA, grandchildren Ilah & Molly-Tulip Wilson, Ben Noah & Jonah Rumney. He was preceded in death by a stillborn brother David Wilson.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 1:00pm 2:30pm on Saturday March 9, 2013 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming. A celebration of Dick’s life will follow at 2:30pm on Saturday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Fr. Larry Van Damme to officiate. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 will accord military honors at the conclusion of the services.
