Superiorland wrestlers eliminated from MHSAA state finals
MARQUETTE – After winning their first round consolation matches Friday, four Superiorland wrestlers lost their next bouts in the MHSAA state individual finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
All have been eliminated from further competition.
Marquette’s Curt Calovecchi beat Collin Rankin of Redford Union, 9-7, in a Division 2, 171-pound bout in the first round of consolation action. But Calovecchi then fell to Kanon Dean of Lowell, 5-2, in the second round.
In Division 4, Westwood’s David Lancour pinned JaCorey Purcell of Bangor in 2:46 in a 285-pound match before being pinned himself by Jake Khoury of Traverse City St. Francis in 1:56.
Ishpeming’s Johnathan Willey, at 135 pounds, pinned Jed Abbott of St. Louis in 50 seconds, but then lost to Wyatt Spangler of Hudson, 9-8.
Mat Gonzalez of Manistique posted a 5-2 decision over Grass Lake’s Seth Radabaugh at 145. The Emerald then fell to Matt Lopez of Bloomingdale, 5-3.
The only local wrestler to lose his first round consolation bout was Cole Gonzalez of Manistique. He dropped a 3-1 decision to Andres Montoya of Constantine in a 140-pound bout.
