All five Superiorland wrestlers drop first match at MHSAA state wrestling finals

MARQUETTE – Superiorland wrestlers took it on the chin Thursday in the first round of the MHSAA state individual finals being held at the The Palace of Auburn Hills.

All five dropped their matches, four by pin.

Curt Calovecchi of Marquette suffered a pin at 5:58 in his 171-pound Division 2 match with Dan Dykstra of Middleville Thornapple Kellog.

In Division 4, Ishpeming’s Johnathan Willey was pinned by Ryan Hunt of Martin in 5:12 in a 135-pound battle.

Westwood’s David Lancour took a fall in 4:35 in his 285-pound match with Jacob Lonergan of St. Louis.

Brothers Cole and Mat Gonzalez of Manistique both lost their opening bouts.

Cole suffered a pin in 5:27 at 140 to Chad Decker of Grass Lake while Mat lost a 4-3 decision at 145 to Dillen Decker of Carson City.

All five, who are scheduled to wrestle again today, can’t gain a championship, but could finish as high as third in their respective weight classes and divisions.
