Marquette ousted from MHSAA Class A district by host Traverse City West
TRAVERSE CITY – Unable to hold off host Traverse City West down the stretch, the Marquette Senior High School girls basketball team dropped a 39-34 decision to the Titans in an MHSAA Class A district semifinal game Wednesday night.
Morgan Seibert scored 12 points, but the Redettes couldn’t muster much additional offense in finishing the season at 18-4.
“We made enough plays to go ahead 34-33 with a couple of minutes left, but we couldn’t make a play at the end,” MSHS head coach Ben smith said.
“(Katie) Placek went 11 of 13 at the line (in finishing with 19 points) for T.C. West. We let her get to spots where if we wanted to hold them, you can’t do.”
MSHS trailed 11-5 after one quarter, but got to within 19-17 at the half.
“We got off to a slow start,” Smith said. “(The Titans) got to the bucket too easily and to the offensive glass early.
“Seibert scored a bucket at the buzzer at the half, though, and we were in striking distance.”
He added after Marquette’s 53-46 win over Petoskey Monday, the Redettes came out a little flat.
“We needed to come out with the same fire and we just didn’t do it for four quarters,” he said.
