Escanaba shuts out Negaunee 8-0 in pre-regional hockey semfinal

NEGAUNEE – Negaunee bowed out of the first round of the MHSAA high school hockey playoffs as Escanaba scored an 8-0 mercy rule-shortened victory at the Negaunee Ice Arena on Tuesday night.

Levi Wunder scored six goals, including two shorthanded and one on a power play, to lead the Eskymos to a berth in the pre-regional finals at Marquette on Thursday night.

Miners goalie Anthony Moyle nearly stood on his head stopping 25 shots in the first period while only allowing two goals, both by Wunder, a former Marquette Electricians Midget AAA player.

“Give him a lot of credit,” Negaunee coach Eric Hill said about his junior goalie, “his hard work kept us in there for awhile.

“Wunder is such a good player. He sees the ice so well, so he’s always in position to capitalize when the opposition makes a mistake. And he can create his own chances, too.”

Moyle also stopped 19 shots in the second period, when Escanaba added five goals, and had one more save in the third for 45 total before Wunder ended the game 1:19 into the final period.

The Miners put seven shots, six in the second period, on Esky goalie Nick LeMire.
