Yooper Luge continues today in downtown Houghton

HOUGHTON – Most days, someone sledding down Isle Royale Street on a sled would end up with bruises, or at least some dirty looks thrown their way.

That changed Friday and continues today with the third annual Yooper Luge, which is set up on Isle Royale Street and Shelden Avenue between Wells Fargo and Cyberia Cafe.

There will be open sledding and registration between 2 and 3 p.m today. The competition begins at 3 p.m. and could go for an hour, depending on the number of entries, said Trina Barrette of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce. Th event is free of charge.

There will also be open sledding after the competition.

First, second and third prizes will be given out in different age groups for the best-decorated, most creative design and most spectacular wipeout.

Sleds can be made from plastic, cardboard, duct tape, glue, tin foil, shower curtains and garbage bags. Wood, metal, fiberglass and aluminum are not permitted.

Participants aged 17 and younger must wear helmets and they are recommended for those 18 and older.

“Why not sled down a hill when you normally can’t?” Barrette said. “It’s just a great community event. … it’s a fun thing to do – sled down a main road in downtown Houghton.”
