Bernard John Meni
GWINN, MI – Bernard John “Bernie” Meni, 72, of 378 North Princeton Drive, Princeton Location, Forsyth Township, died Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for one day.
Bernie was born August 13, 1940 in Ishpeming to Roco B. and Katherine A. (Miller) Meni, was a graduate of Gwinn High School, Class of 1958, and was a lifelong Gwinn area resident. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from 1958-1964. Following his service to his country he worked for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for 30 years, retiring from the Empire Mine in 1993. He also worked Forsyth Township Police Department as an officer.
Mr. Meni was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Gwinn. He volunteered for the D.N.R. as a keyman and also for the Forsyth Township E.M.S. His hobbies included woodworking and making Christmas decorations. He enjoyed traveling, especially his vacations to Florida. He was a devoted son, brother, and uncle.
Surviving are his mother, Katherine Meni of Princeton, a brother David Meni of Princeton, a sister, Karen (Corby) Meeks of Greenville, WI, 5 nieces: Kathy (Rick) Darnick, Penny (Randy) Immel, Betty (Randy) Roberts, Rachael (Wayne) Meeks, Natalie (Scott) Meeks, 7 great nieces and great nephews, 1 great great niece. He was preceded in death by his father Roco Meni on August 29, 2004, a brother Gary, 2 sisters, Shirley and Sherry and a great nephew, Adam Roberts.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Rev. John Boyle officiating. Burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends in the Baraga Room of St. Anthony Catholic Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
