Mustangs rally over Hematites in overtime

ISHPEMING – Former professional baseball catcher and manager Yogi Berra once said “it ain’t over until it’s over.”

The Munising High School boys basketball team proved him right Thursday night, rallying for a 53-50 non-conference win in overtime over host Ishpeming.

Coach Dan Waterman’s Mustangs trailed the Hematites 46-31 early in the fourth quarter, but behind eight points by Gage Webster, the Mustangs outscored Ishpeming 17-2 the rest of the way to force an extra four minutes of play.

After the Hematites opened overtime with a bucket by Alex Briones, the Mustangs’ Garrett Blank buried a 3-point shot and Webster sank two free throws with 13.5 seconds left to gain the win.

Webster scored 21 points to lead the Mustangs (14-4). Teammate Ben Stasewich added 11 points.

Joe Lyle led Ishpeming (6-10) – which led 33-18 at the half – with 21 points. Briones chipped in 13.

“We were just 6 of 18 in free throws (overall) and 2 of 8 in the fourth quarter,” Ishpeming head coach John Tiziani said. “That’s the only aspect of the game where we didn’t adequately succeed.

“We completely outplayed them … our kids played as hard as they can play. I have no complaints.”
