Marquette boys win U.P. alpine ski title, girls runners-up
BESSEMER – The Marquette Senior High School boys used team balance to easily blow by their competition at the Upper Peninsula Finals high school alpine ski meet on Thursday at Blackjack Ski Resort near Bessemer.
The MSHS girls got top finishes out of Whitney Stilwell to snag a solid second-place showing among that meet’s four teams.
The Redmen’s Luke Johnson won the slalom in a two-run time of 1 minute, 29.58 seconds, just over two seconds ahead of runner-up Nick Cecconi of Kingsford.
MSHS’ Dylan Larson beat out teammate Matt Anderson for the giant slalom title by seven-hundredths of a second, 1:16.74 to 1:16.81.
Marquette scored 14 points in GS and 20 in slalom for 34 total, far ahead of runner-up Houghton’s 70. Kingsford was third with 86 and Ironwood had 103.
In the slalom, the Redmen’s Nick Weber was third overall in 1:32.72, Larson sixth in 1:33.82, Anderson 10th in 1:37.37 and Jason Mackey 12th in 1:38.94.
In GS, Johnson was fourth overall in 1:17.33, Weber seventh in 1:17.73, Kyle King eighth in 1:18.11 and Mackey 27th in 1:51.99.
Stilwell won the GS in 1:19.79, about a third of a second ahead of Lesley Hamar of Houghton, while the Marquette skier was runner-up in the slalom in 1:39.01, not quite a full second behind Mandy Haferkorn of Kingsford.
MSHS scored 31 points in GS and 35 in slalom for 66 total. Houghton won with 48, Kingsford third with 84 and Ironwood 116.
In GS, the Redettes’ Angela Brown was fifth in 1:22.76, Maggie Guter 12th in 1:27.55, Nikki Touchinski 13th in 1:29.76 and Hannah Lahti 14th in 1:31.09.
In slalom, Brown was eighth in 1:48.25, Guter 11th in 1:52.81, Lahti 14th in 1:58.09 and Touchinski 16th in 2:01.94.
