Area man, 56, found on his West Branch property near burned vehicle

MARQUETTE – Police are working today to determine the cause of death of a Marquette County man found Wednesday morning next to a burned vehicle.

The 56-year-old man was located by troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post at about 9:20 a.m. The body, which had received minor burns, was by a burned pickup truck near JH Lane, a private road. The body and vehicle were found on the back side of the man’s property – located along U.S. 41 in West Branch Township – and within a mile of his residence.

Police said this morning that the man had been reported missing, and was last seen at about 3 p.m. Tuesday. Police said when troopers located the body, the fire had already run its course and the truck was not smoldering. The death, according to police, is being considered “suspicious” and is under investigation.

An autopsy was scheduled for this morning, and police were hoping to determine what events preceded the man’s death. The state police were not releasing the man’s name this morning, pending the completion of the autopsy.

Troopers at the Negaunee Post were asssited by MSP detectives, as well as the MSP’s 8th District fire investigator and Marquette General Hospital EMS.
