New snowfall blankets area
MARQUETTE – With the exception of Northern Michigan University, Superiorland schools were closed today due to snow and windy conditions.
A winter storm warning remains in effect until midnight tonight, according to the National Weather Service’s office in Negaunee Township.
For the daytime hours today, the forecast calls for breezy and cold conditions. Snow showers will include areas of blowing snow with accumulations of 4 to 6 inches near Marquette and Skandia and 3 to 5 inches over the higher terrain of Marquette County, the forecast states.
Winds may gust up to 40 mph during the day while tonight, northwest winds will continue to blow at 15-20 mph inland and 20-30 mph near the Lake Superior shore, with another 2 to 4 inches of snow expected. With lows of 3 degrees inland, wind chill readings could be about 20 below zero tonight, according to the NWS forecast.
That 20-below wind chill is anticipated to continue Wednesday morning, with a chance of snow showers all day and a high of about 12 degrees.
