Redmen wrestler Calovecchi is state bound

BAY CITY – The third time’s the charm for Marquette Senior High School wrestler Curt Calovecchi.

In his third trip to the regionals, the Redmen senior finally qualified for the MHSAA individual state finals by winning three of four matches on Saturday.

Wrestling at 171 pounds at Bay City Western, Calovecchi lost his second match to get knocked into the consolation bracket. His first match there, the critical one that clinched his finals berth, was a 6-5 victory over James Davis of Flint Kearsley.

The finals, which includes four wrestlers from each regional, will be held Feb. 28 and March 1-2 at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Calovecchi opened the regionals with a pin at 1:21 of Matt Sears of Ortonville Brandon. He then lost by pin at 3:06 to C.J. Melton of Lapeer West before defeating Davis. Calovecchi wrapped up his day by clinching third place with a pin at 1:29 of Kyle Carter of Big Rapids.
