Roy, Jenny, & Joshua Kato
MERRILL, WI – Roy Kato, 35, of Merrill, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 as a result of an automobile accident. He was born August 14, 1977 in Landsthul, Germany to Melvin & Silvia (Ekdahl) Kato. On May 9, 1998 he and Jenny Erickson were united in marriage in Eben Junction, MI.
Roy was a 1996 graduate of Superior Central High School in Eben Junction, MI. After high school, Roy enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served until being honorably discharged in 1999. When Roy returned from the Air Force he lived and worked in Marquette. He and his family moved to the Wausau area where he eventually worked for Old Castle Glass Company. They moved to Oklahoma in 2008 and just recently returned to the Merrill/Wausau area. Roy was active in church and Boy Scouts. He was very involved with the Wausau Area JayCee’s. He and Jenny were active in their children’s sporting events. Roy loved to hunt and spend time in the outdoors but he especially loved his family and spending time with them.
Survivors include his daughter: Brooke Kato, Merrill; mother: Silvia Kato, Merrill; sister: Trina (Dean) Berndt, Appleton; maternal grandparents: Larry & Marianne Ekdahl, Merrill; maternal great- grandmother: Bernice Ekdahl, Manistique, MI; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jenny Kato, son, Joshua Kato, father, Mike Kato, and paternal grandparents, Roy & Florence Kato.
Jenny Kato, 35, of Merrill, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 as a result of an automobile accident. She was born August 2, 1977 in Escanaba, MI to Joseph and Susanne (West) Erickson. On May 9, 1998 she and Roy Kato were united in marriage in Eben Junction, MI.
Jenny was a 1995 graduate of Gwinn High School in Gwinn, MI. She attended college at Northern Michigan University for 2 years. After school, she married Roy. Jenny drove school bus in Wausau and in Oklahoma. She and her family had just returned to the Merrill/Wausau area. Jenny was active in church and Boy Scouts. She was a soccer mom and enjoyed doing community service work. Jenny was very active in JayCee’s and sang in the choir of her church. Jenny always had a smile on her face and never met a stranger. Her biggest joy in life was her family.
Survivors include her daughter: Brooke Kato, Merrill; parents: Joe & Sue Erickson, Skandia, MI; two brothers: Joe (Jody) Erickson Jr, Waynesville, OH and Jerry (Annette) Erickson, DeRidder, LA; and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, son, Joshua, and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
Joshua P. Kato, age 13, of Merrill, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 as a result of an automobile accident. He was born June 8, 1999 in Ishpeming, MI to Roy & Jenny (Erickson) Kato.
Josh was a Junior High school student in Oklahoma where he was involved in choir, soccer and boy scouts. He was quite involved in community service. Josh was very active in his church where he belonged to the youth group. As an older brother, Josh was very protective of his little sister, Brooke. He was a very good student and was even taking college courses at his young age. Josh will be remembered for his good natured “happy go lucky” attitude in life and a big smile to go with it.
Survivors include his sister: Brooke Kato, Merrill; Paternal Grandmother: Silvia Kato, Merrill; Maternal Grandparents: Joe & Sue Erickson, Skandia, MI; Paternal Great-Grandparents: Larry & Marianne Ekdahl, Merrill; Paternal Great- Great-Grandmother: Bernice Ekdahl, Manistique, MI; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, paternal Grandfather, Mike Kato, Maternal Great-Grand- parents, Alfred & Bessie Erickson and Charles & Naomi West, and a Step-Great-Grandmother, Imagene West.
Services will be held 7 PM Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Waid Funeral Home. The Rev. Freddy McMillen will officiate. Friends may call from 4-7 PM at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Merrill Memorial Park in the spring. A Memorial Service will be held in Skandia, MI at a later date. Waid Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
