Marquette gymnastics moves closer to regional tournament berth

MARQUETTE – A 123.9-118.9 win over host Escanaba Wednesday has moved the Marquette Senior High School girls gymnastics team one step closer to a regional tournament berth.

Redettes head coach Kris Lakenen said her squad needs one more team score of at least 120 points this season to move on to regional competition.

Against Escanaba, Avery Rochester qualified for individual regional action in the vault, bars and beam. Against the Eskymos, she won the beam, and finished second in the vault, bars and all-around.

Teammate Dinele Stewart tied Rochester for a runner-up finish in the bars while placing third in beam. She qualified for regional play in bars, Lakenen said.

Marquette’s Mikayla Mitchell and Sarah Fosco will be competing in the regionals in floor exercise. Mitchell came in third on vault and all-around against Escanaba, while Flood placed third in floor.
