MSHS ski teams dominate standings at Pine Mountain
IRON MOUNTAIN – Marquette dominated the team standings while Mandy Haferkorn and Luke Johnson swept the races in a high school ski meet Tuesday at Pine Mountain.
Marquette captured team titles for both boys and girls. Kingsford’s boys edged Houghton-Hancock by one-half point for runner-up. Those same schools tied for second in the girls’ division.
“Coach Marty Paulson’s Marquette team just may be the strongest group of boys in the state of Michigan,” Kingsford coach Kevin Cory said.
The Flivvers’ Haferforn (1:02.96) outraced Marquette’s Whitney Stilwell (1:04.53) for slalom honors.
In giant slalom, Haferkorn (1:02.96) took first over teammate Camille Cory (1:05.81), who was third in slalom.
“She was so awesome to watch, just on her game,” Cory said. “No one was beating her today.”
Cory posted the fastest second run time in giant slalom to vault her from fourth to second.
Marquette’s Johnson (1:00.07) nipped Kingsford’s Nick Cecconi (1:00.11) by .04 for the boys slalom title.
Johnson (49.74), Matt Anderson (50.32) and Joe Weber (50.41) led a Marquette sweep in GS. Cecconi claimed the fourth spot (50.92).
“Nick Cecconi had strong finishes,” Kevin Cory said. “Adam Michaud was killing it on the first run of giant slalom, but a fundamental mistake put him on the ground and he could not recover.”
