Board to consider Sawyer security pact

MARQUETTE – The Marquette County Board is scheduled to consider approval of a contract to continue providing armed sheriff’s deputies as security at Sawyer International Airport.

The board meets in regular session at 6 p.m. in Room 231 of the Henry Skewis Annex to the Marquette County Courthouse in Marquette.

The Transportation Security Administration has extended the Law Enforcement Reimbursement Agreement Program and funding through Sept. 30, 2015. Under the TSA reimbursable agreement, Sawyer is required to provide armed security, with arrest and detention powers, for departing flights.

Due to a reduced number of flights at Sawyer, checkpoint hours have been reduced to nine hours each weekday and four hours on Saturday, at a not-to-exceed rate of $20 an hour. The contract has been revised to reflect the changes in hours.

Airport staff recommends the board approve the contract, pending review by civil counsel.

Additional agenda items to be considered include purchase of a truck for the building codes department, a Little Trout Lake pavilion renovation grant, a soil conservation agreement, a lease agreement for a property at Sawyer, a letter of support for a township road project and purchase of 911 related software.
