Patrick J. McCarthy
MARQUETTE, MI. – Patrick James McCarthy, age 72, of Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday afternoon, January 27, 2013 at Marquette General Hospital.
Pat was born January 6, 1941 in Marquette, a son of Florence “Floy” and Olive (Murray) McCarthy. Afflicted with cerebral palsy from birth, Pat was raised by his parents, and following their deaths, was in the care of his uncle and aunt, Clayton and Harriet McCarthy. Throughout the years, Pat’s caregivers included family and friends, and several facilities, most recently Propylon of Marquette. Pat loved his caregivers and they responded to him similarly. He enjoyed being happy and was a frequent camper at Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay. In fact, many years ago, he was the first camper selected to receive the annual check, from the Harley Owner’s Group (HOG), on behalf of Bay Cliff Health Camp. Pat had a fascination with cars, especially Buicks and Studebakers, and knew the make, model, and year of various automobiles. He was an avid and enthusiastic fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Wings. Gentle of heart, Pat had a special fondness for children, dogs, and the many kind, caring, and loving people who cared for him, especially his “special girls” at Propylon.
Pat is survived by his brother, Joseph (Gail) McCarthy of Marquette; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; special uncle and aunt, Clayton and Harriet McCarthy; his sister, Elaine Fritz; and brothers, Gordon and Michael McCarthy.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Christopher Catholic Church on April 27 and will be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bay Cliff Health Camp, P.O. Box 310, Big Bay, MI 49808.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the many relatives, friends, caregivers, and especially the fine staff at Propylon, for the many kindnesses extended to Pat and his family throughout the years. Your thoughtfulness and caring added greatly to his quality of life.
