Jill Arbutus Maki

NEWBERRY, MI. – Jill Arbutus Maki passed on, after a courageous battle with lung cancer, at 1:30 am on January 30, 2013 at Marquette General Hospital with her best friend, Terry Tryan, at her side.

Jill was born and raised on a 360 acre farm on M-28 outside of Newberry, the first and only daughter of George and Fern Maki.

Jill graduated from Newberry High School in the class of 1961 and she “caught the first thing smoking out of town “Never to return!”” Jill attended Central Michigan University for two years before beginning a long and successful career with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. She started her employment in Detroit and completed the last 15 years of her 39 year career in Marquette. After retiring from Blue Cross in 2000, Jill retired to her hometown and became the chairwoman of the Luce County Democratic Party. In 2006 Jill ran for and was elected a Luce County Commission Seat representing Pentland Township. She was reelected three times, including the 2012 election.

Jill was a lifelong University of Michigan Football Fan and a great fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions, Pistons and Red Wings. She was also a lifelong pet owner leaving Lola (the dog) and Winnie (the cat) orphaned.

Jill was preceded in death by her parents George and Fern (Scott) Maki. She is survived by her older brother Jay Maki also of Newberry.

There will be a celebration of Jill’s life at the Newberry Elks Lodge #1705 on Saturday February 2, 2013 at 3:00 pm. Stop in and have a beverage and some eats on Jill and share your memories with friends and family.
