To the Journal editor:
Marquette Area Public Schools Community Enrichment classes are available in 2012-2013 thanks to efforts by this community to reinstate the program. A survey is available through Feb. 5 to indicate your requests for classes to be offered and the times you prefer.
Please go online to www.mapsnet.org, and on the left side of the home page, click on “Adult and Community Ed Classes” to take the survey or call Monica Noreen at 225-4372 for a paper copy.
You will recall that the MAPS Board attempted to eliminate almost the entire CE program last summer when few were watching. Through your signatures on a petition to the board, countless pleadings at board meetings, and eventually the administration’s plan for costs to be revenue neutral, we convinced the board to extend Community Enrichment for one year.
The Marquette Regional History Center and the Marquette Arts and Culture Center stepped forward to partner with MAPS this semester to offer a few classes, and can do more with sufficient time to plan. I applaud their involvement. Other non-profit groups will follow.
Community Enrichment is one link that the ever-growing population of non-parents has with this district, and our need for life-long learning should be valued. If you do not respond to the survey, or sign up for classes, this school board will have one more excuse to cut Community Enrichment in June. Please, don’t let that happen. Let your voice be heard now.
