Elaine L. Fassbender

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Elaine L. Fassbender, 84, of Marquette, died Thursday afternoon at her home surrounded by family and under the care of Lake Superior Hospice.

She was born September 5, 1928 to Joseph and Veronica (Vanucci) Gaddini in Chicago, IL.

Elaine attended the College of St. Francis in Joliet, IL and graduated from Mundelein College in 1951. After graduation, Elaine worked for the E.I. DuPont Corporation, the Wieboldt Stores Inc. and Sears Roebuck as a comparison shopper.

In 1955, Elaine married John Herman Fassbender and together raised six wonderful children.

After earning a master’s degree in education and a vocational food service degree from Northern Michigan University, Elaine was employed by NMU to develop the food service program at what was the Dominic Jacobetti Skill Center, currently the College of Technology and Applied Science. She then accepted a teaching position with the Negaunee Public School system from which she retired in 1989.

Elaine enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, reading, her home and the many cultural advantages living in Marquette afforded.

She was a devoted member of St. Michael Parish Altar Society, the Arts and Environment Committee, NMU Women’s Club, NMU Book and Garden Clubs, the AAUW and the Marquette Beautification Restorative Committee.

Elaine is survived by her six children, Linda Fassbender, Lisa (Lawrence) Martin, Marisa (Gregory) Shallbetter, John Fassbender, Barth (Connie) Fassbender and Gabrielle (Michael) Munson; and eight beloved grandchildren, Jonna and Megan Shallbetter, Lauren and Kyle Fassbender, Daniel and Sarah Martin, Thomas and John Munson. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; brother, Louis; mother and father.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 12 Noon at St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. Inurnment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring.
