MARQUETTE – The Marquette Senior High School junior varsity hockey team picked up a win and tie against visting Bay Port, Wis., on Jan. 19-20.

In a 2-2 tie on Saturday, the Redmen jumped out to a two-goal lead on scores by Brock Smith but couldn’t hold off Bay Port. Tanner Carrierre had assists on both Smith goals. MSHS goalie Gabe Apple made 22 saves.

“We played very undisciplined hockey and took way too many penalties,” Redmen coach Kevin Thomsen said.

“When you take that many penalties, it makes the third period real hard to finish with any kind of strength.

On Sunday, Smith scored four more times as Marquette put five tallies on the board in the first period en route to an 8-1 victory. Alex Warchol added two goals and Jacob Patterson and Carrierre had one each.

Teammate Nick Tuma tallied up five assists, Carrierre and Nick Borgialli had two apiece and Smith, James Hendrickson, Zach Carter, Tony Fedrizzi and Sam Leow had one each.

“We played much more disciplined hockey and the scoreboard reflected that,” Thomsen said.

Johnny Beckman made 15 saves as his teammates held a 43-16 edge in shots.
