MSHS boys, girls sweeps U.P. Ski Meet on home hill

MARQUETTE – Competing on their home course Thursday no doubt helped downhill skiers at Marquette Senior High School.

The MSHS boys took top honors at the Upper Peninsula Ski Meet held at Marquette Mountain with 28 points to easily outdistance Houghton, which totaled 70. Kingsford (84) and Ironwood (114) placed 3-4, respectively.

In the girls meet, the Redettes placed first with 41 points. Houghton came in second with 63, followed by Kingsford (75) and Ironwood (145).

Marquette’s Whitney Stilwell won the girls slalom (no times available), with Leslie Hamar of Houghton coming in second. Mandy Haferkorn of Kingsford finished third.

Haferkorn beat runner-up Stilwell in the girls’ giant slalom. Hamar captured third.

In the boys slalom race, Joe Weber of Marquette took the No. 1 spot ahead of runner-up and teammate Dylan Larson. Kingsford’s Nick Cecconi placed third.

Marquette’s Matt Anderson won the GS. Weber came in second and Larson third.
