Olsons establish scholarship in memory of their late son
ISHPEMING – The Ishpeming High School head football coach and his wife recently set up a scholarship fund in honor of their late son.
Coach Jeff Olson and his wife have set up the Daniel Olson Memorial Scholarship to give a $1,000 scholarship to an Ishpeming High School graduate who has the same qualities as their son Daniel did.
“We plan to give it to a student who is a hard worker, a good kid on and off the court and displays good character,” Jeff Olson said. “Athletes will be given high priority but it could potentially go to a non-athlete.”
To decide who this student will be, Olson said they plan on forming a committee to help make the decision. It has yet to be decided who will be on the committee and if students will have to apply for the scholarship or will be nominated.
The Olsons lost their 19-year-old son Daniel six months ago when he took his own life.
Since then, they have been very open about what happened to try and prevent someone else from suffering. Jeff Olson said the reason why they are setting up this fund is because it helps them to grieve when they know their son is still helping people.
“Our biggest fear is that over time Daniel and his story will be forgotten,” Olson said. “So we are doing this so Daniel can still help people even after he’s gone.”
The scholarship will be presented during the annual award ceremony that the high school holds. According to Olson, there will be no requirements for what the money can be used for.
“Obviously we would prefer it to be used for college,” Olson said. “But they’ll be able to use it for anything that will help them get through life.”
As of now there is enough money to give a $1,000 scholarship to a 2013 graduate, but they still need to raise enough for the coming years.
Donations can be sent to Anthony Bertucci, Business Office Ishpeming High School, 119 E. Division St., Ishpeming, MI 49849. Checks should be made out to Daniel Olson Memorial Scholarship Fund.
