Sylvia M. Martin
MARQUETTE, Mich. – Sylvia Marie (Tuomisto) Martin, age 97, of 701 Homestead Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Friday morning, January 18, 2013 at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Sylvia was born October 23, 1915 in Louds Spur, a daughter of Kaarlo and Anna (Karlsson) Tuomisto, and attended the Rock River Township School in Eben.
On November 19, 1938, she married Harold Edward Martin in Marquette, and the couple resided on Baraga Avenue. Harold and Sylvia were married over ten years before his death on May 21, 1949.
Sylvia worked very hard to raise and educate their three children and, throughout the years, was employed at the Masonic Temple in food service and then for a time as a seamstress at Dallas Cleaners. Her longest employment, however, was at Northern Michigan University where she worked in food service, retiring in 1979. She enjoyed knitting and sewing, creating clothing for family and friends.
Sylvia is survived by two daughters, June (Joseph) Sherman of Wilmette, IL and Anne (Mi-chael) Lyon of Warner Robins, GA; her son, Tom (Sharon) Martin of Marquette; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Elsie Pearl of Livonia; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Sylvia was preceded in death by sisters, Esther Schlachter and Vienna Maki; and a brother, Ray Tuomisto.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Saturday, January 26, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon with Rev. Steve Hulke officiating. Burial will be made in the Park Cemetery.
