L’Anse, Baraga girls win

DOLLAR BAY – Madi Swanson gashed the Bays and Kelsey Ross finished them off Friday, as L’Anse came away from Dollar Bay 66-42 winners.

Swanson scored nine of her 18 points in the first quarter as L’Anse jumped out to an 18-2 lead, while Kelsey Ross hit six threes en route to a career high 29 points.

Dollar Bay coach Steve Krahling said Swanson was too much to handle when the Bays started the game in man-to-man defense, but when they provided more help, the outside shots started falling.

“We played really well the rest of the game, but we were just a split-second behind getting to Kelsey in the third and fourth quarter when she hit four of those threes,” he said.

On offense, Dollar Bay perked up in time to close to within six in the second half before the Purple Hornets (8-2) put it away with a 19-8 fourth-quarter margin.

Dollar Bay (3-6) got 15 points from Julia Daavettila.

Baraga 46, Jeffers 41

BARAGA – The Lady Vikings didn’t get off to a great start, but they picked it up in time for a Copper Country Conference victory over winless Jeffers

“Those are the kind of teams that even as a player I hated to play because you never want to be somebody’s first win,” Baraga coach Mariah Dunham said.

Baraga put itself in danger of doing just that when it gave up 18 points in the first quarter, but overturned the deficit by halftime.

The Lady Vikings, who led 24-23 at the half, then outscored the Jets 14-8 in the third and held off the visitors the rest of the way.

Jenna Heikkinen had three triples and a team-best 11 points for Baraga (5-5, 2-2 CCC.

The Jets (0-12, 0-5) got a game-high 13 points from Shelby Seppanen. Kelsey Heinonen added 11 for Jeffers, which hosts Lake Linden-Hubbell Monday.
