Hematites polish off Emeralds

ISHPEMING – Defense was the name of the game for the Ishpeming High School girls’ basketball team Friday night.

The Hematites put the clamps on visiting Manistique, taking a 47-19 Mid-Peninsula Conference triumph.

IHS (7-4 overall, 5-1 league) limited the Emeralds (4-7, 2-4) to just 10 points in the first half and nine in the second.

“Our defense dictated the tempo of the game,” IHS assistant coach Tom Graves said. “Our defense started our offense, too.”

Alesha O’Brien paced the Hematites offensively with 19 points. Teammate Jessica Spencer added 16.

“Alesha was phenomenal tonight,” Graves said. “She attacked the basket and played great defense.”

Leah Cook and Kyra Lauzon scored six points apiece for Manistique.
