Annual Heikki Lunta events get under way Saturday with fishing derby
NEGAUNEE – Negaunee Irontown’s annual Heikki Lunta Winterfest gets under way Saturday with the annual fishing derby.
The derby runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Teal Lake with cash prizes and a raffle for participants. The cost is $1 for youths 12 years old and younger and $5 for adults. Registration in advance can be done at the Holiday Station and Buck’s Party Store in Negaunee and the Holiday Station and Wilderness Sports in Ishpeming. Same day registration will take place at Paisano’s Pizza.
The day continues with events such as the Heikki Lunta Dance from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Negaunee Senior Center, featuring live music by The Hart Beats. Admission is $5 at the door.
Following the dance at 5 p.m., bonfires will be lit along the shores of Teal Lake and the Winter Feast will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Negaunee Senior Center. The steak and lasagna dinner costs $12.
Concluding the first day of events will be fireworks shot off over Teal Lake.
On Sunday, a buffet breakfast will be served at the Negaunee Eagles club from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for ages 10 and younger. The winterfest will then conclude with Heikki Lunta Blooper Ball, a winter baseball event with oversized bats and balls held at Old Towne Festival Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Heikki Lunta is a legendary Finnish snow god who is said to have the ability to perform a dance causing snowfall.
