William M. Leaver Sr.
MARQUETTE, Mich. – William Michael Leaver, Sr., age 69, of 425 Fisher Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Wednesday morning, January 16, 2013, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, where he resided.
Bill was born February 14, 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and attended Catholic grade school, graduating from public high school in 1961. He joined the Air Force right after graduation and on October 3, 1961, shortly before graduation from basic training, married Joan B. Maloney in Pittsburgh. Upon completion of basic training, Bill and Joan were sent to K.I. Sawyer AFB for four years. While stationed there, daughter, Susan, and son, Bill Jr. were born. When Bill was discharged, the family moved back to Pittsburgh where a third child, Michelle, was born.
After only a short time back in Pittsburgh, Bill and Joan decided to move back to Marquette. In 1965-1966, Bill opened four body shops, two in Negaunee, one in Harvey, and one in Sands. A short time later, Bill started racing stock cars at area race tracks in Norway, Escanaba, Sands, and Canada. He also purchased a 26′ Lake Superior boat. It was seldom used for fishing, its main purpose being used for touring and cruising on Lake Superior. After running his body shops for almost thirty years, Bill had to have his wrists reconstructed and was not able to do body work anymore. He sold his body shops and started a limousine business in Marquette. Prestige Limousine Service began with one limo and ended with nine, all being driven by women. Bill had his limo business for fourteen years. During this time he got a new hobby. Following Joan’s death, Bill moved to Menominee where he was a night watchman at a plastics factory. He came to reside at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in 2007.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Michelle (Don) Leaver-Oberg of Sands and son, William (Teresa) Leaver, Jr. of Romulus; son-in-law, Mark Smedman of Harvey; his grandchildren, Mary and Robert Smedman, Adam Hamilton, Kaylan and Joshua Oberg; a sister, Carol (Kim) Longtine; several nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, John “Pops” and Cecelia “Baba” Schultz; wife, Joan; daughters, Loretta Leaver and Susan Marie Smedman; and grandson, Michael J. Smedman.
Friends may call at the D.J. Jacobetti chapel on Saturday, January 19, beginning at 12:00 noon until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Ben Paris will officiate and spring burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Activity Fund, Jacobetti Home for Veterans, 425 Fisher Street, Marquette, MI 49855.
