Robert B. Heath

SKANDIA, Mich. – Robert Burney Heath, age 85, of 183 Kreiger Drive, Skandia, died at home February 15, 2013.

Robert was born May 27, 1927, at Cassopolis, Michigan, the son of the late Bennett and Sylvia (Grennell) Heath of Skandia. He graduated from Graveraet High School, Marquette, and while attending there, joined the State Troops. He was very proud of the uniform and rifle he was issued. Robert joined the Navy upon graduation from high school during World War II and spent much of his service stationed in Saipan. In December 1950, Robert wed Mary Loucks of West Branch Township, and have made their home in Skandia since then. They have two children, Gary and Deanne. Robert attended Western Pennsylvania Horological Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and became certified in watch and clock repair. He also attended Ferris Institute (now Ferris State University) in Big Rapids, Michigan. He was co-owner with his brother, David Heath, in Heath’s True Value Hardware and Greenhouses, managing the hardware department. He retired in 1987. Robert was a retired member of Skandia West Branch Fire Department and a past member of the West Branch Gun Club, a past charter member of the Skandia-West Branch Lions, and past member of the National Rifle Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #05670, American Legion Post #0349, and of a local snowmobile club. Robert was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time out-of-doors, and at his log cabin at the lake. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, seeing the country, and visiting friends and relatives.

Robert is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Deanne Heath Moore; and son, Gary Heath. Also he is survived by granddaughters, Alea (Chris) Cave and Kathryn Danielson; and great grandsons, Tanner and Holden Cave, and great-granddaughter, Katelyn Moore; a sister, Helen (Kenneth) Johnson and brother-in-law, Donald (Joan) Loucks, Bob (Betty) Loucks, David (Gloria) Loucks; sister-in-law, Judy Kunde; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceding him in death, aside from his parents, are a grandson, Shawn Danielson; his brothers, Alfred and his wife Betty Heath, David and his wife Ann Heath, John and his wife Barbara Heath, and Charles Heath; also a son-in-law, Ed Moore; and brothers-in-law, Gerald Loucks and William Kunde.

Funeral services will be held at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Skandia on Saturday, January 19, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. James Duehring officiating. Friends may call at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be made in the church cemetery in the spring and will be announced.
