Wildcat men’s basketball team lets lead slip away in final minutes
BIG RAPIDS – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team couldn’t hold a second-half lead and lost its second straight, 51-41 at Ferris State on Saturday afternoon.
NMU, 4-10 overall and 3-7 in the GLIAC, led for 19 straight minutes in the middle of the game, but Ferris (8-6, 7-3) tied the score at 32-32 with 10:25 to go and took the lead for good less than three minutes later.
Sophomore guard Quinten Calloway led Wildcat scorers with 13 points, while junior forward Matthew Craggs had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
NMU held a slight advantage on the boards, 32-29, but had four more turnovers.
Ferris was paced by Drew Lehman with 15 points, while teammate Daniel Sutherlin added 13 points and eight rebounds.
The score was tied at 13-13 before NMU’s Spencer Huss of Marquette hit a 3-pointer to put his team ahead for the long stretch. The Wildcats led 24-21 at halftime and extended the lead to as many as seven points.
Northern returns home for games this week at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Saginaw Valley State and 11 a.m. Saturday against Wayne State at the Berry Events Center.
