Roy Erland Byykkonen Sr.
ISHPEMING, Mich. – Roy Erland Byykkonen, age 76, went to be with the Lord, on Friday, January 11, 2013, with family by his side, at The Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he has resided since 2008. He was born October 4, 1936, in Pelkie, Michigan, a son of the late Abel and Lillian Byykkonen. He graduated from Baraga High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. He re-enlisted and served from 1958-1961. He married Shirley Pesola on September 2, 1961. He worked for the Ford Motor Company, White Pine Copper Company, Ropes Gold Mine, the Mather B Mine, and the U.S. Postal Service. He also worked at Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, where he retired in 1998 with 28 years of service.
He enjoyed bike riding, fishing, gardening, getting together with his friends for coffee, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching Tiger baseball as well as the Green Bay Packers. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time outdoors at his camp in Nisula, and volunteering at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette with his wife, Shirley.
Roy is survived by 7 children, Susan Bradbury of Iron Mountain, Michigan, Roy (Amy) Byykkonen Jr. of Seattle, Washington, Pam (Ken) Matheson of Giese, Minnesota, Carol (John) Redders of Hartford, Wisconsin, Mary Wilmes of Omro, Wisconsin, John Byykkonen of L’Anse, Michigan, and Patsy (Rich) Lusardi of Ishpeming, Michigan. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Josiah, Trenton, Emmalee and Elliott Bradbury, Peter and Rebecca Byykkonen, Jaron (Leah) Matheson, Janessa Matheson, Micaela, Hannah, and Michael Redders, James, Steven, and Holly Wilmes, and Stephanie and Kaylee Lusardi. He is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, River Bradbury, and Alaso and Zaven Matheson.
He is also survived by four brothers, Donald (Verna) Byykkonen of Phoenix, Arizona, Bob (Irene) Byykkonen of Ishpeming, Michigan, David (Agnes) Byykkonen of Houghton, Michigan, and Bruce (Katie) Byykkonen of Lake Linden, Michigan. He is also survived by two sisters, Gertrude Makela of Hancock, Michigan, and Eva Kohtala of Ishpeming, Michigan. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Abel and Lillian Byykkonen, also by his wife, Shirley Byykkonen, and two grandchildren, Lydia and Davin Bradbury.
The funeral service will be held at Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming, Michigan on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, with the Pastor D. Michael Carriere to officiate. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the memorial service at 1 p.m. Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380 at the conclusion of the service. There will be a spring burial at the Elo Cemetery.
