Raymond G. Smith

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Raymond G. Smith, age 78, of 226 W. Prospect Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital, following ten days of watchful, loving care by his wife, Mary Karen.

Born May 21, 1934, in Marquette, a son of George and Jennie (Hill) Smith, Ray was a lifelong Marquette resident. He graduated from the Graveraet High School in 1952, working for a time at the Mather B Mine before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Marquette and began a career with the City of Marquette Fire Department, retiring after 25 years of service. Ray was an enthusiastic Detroit sports and NMU hockey fan. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, was an avid outdoorsman, and found great pleasure in escaping to the family camp, “Camp Split The Difference” in Bark River. Another favorite get-away was the yearly trips to Deerfield, Florida, where Ray and Mary Karen enjoyed seeing all the friends they made during the years. Ray was also an avid gardener, growing hot peppers, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, all the ingredients for making delicious dill pickles, salsas, relishes, and just about anything else that popped into his head. Family, friends, and neighbors all delighted in his bountiful harvest and delicious concoctions.

Ray is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Karen (Kroken) Smith; sons, Raymond Scott (Debbie Aro) Smith of Marquette and Randall Steven Smith of Sturgeon Bay, WI; a granddaughter, Amber Smith of Ft Myers, FL; his mother-in-law, Eileen Kroken of Marquette; a sister, Joyce Koval of Marquette; brother, Michael (Penny) Smith of Marquette, numerous nieces and nephews; and his faithful canine friend, Coco. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Donald Kroken; and brother-in-law, Leo Koval.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Monday, January 14, from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service at 7:00 p.m. Rev. Leon Jarvis will preside and burial will be made in the Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Scott, Randy, and Mike Smith, Donny Kroken, Bob Larson, and Mike Koval.
