BIG BAY, MI – Carol E. Wilcox, age 66, of Big Bay, passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, January 5, 2013 at her home, in the loving care of her husband.
Born in Carsonville, Michigan on September 12, 1946, to William and Beulah (Zigler) Walker, Carol was raised in Carsonville and graduated from Carsonville High School in 1964. On September 5, 1969, she married Gary Wilcox and the couple spent their honeymoon fishing in Big Bay. It was in 1975 that Carol and Gary decided to make Big Bay the place they would establish their home and raise their three children. It was around this time that Carol began working for the Huron Mountain Club, becoming a longtime employee, working nearly every job for the club that she could. Carol had a passion for the outdoors, and took in everything that nature had to offer; from hunting deer and bear, to fishing local streams, rivers and lakes. She also enjoyed gardening, quilting and, in later years, making maple syrup. Carol was an easy going person who had a unique way of looking at life and people. She always had a smile and will be remembered for the way she would greet people, as well as her creative stories. She was an exceptional homemaker who truly loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and would do anything she could for them.
Carol is survived by her husband and best friend of 43 years, Gary Wilcox; her son, Bart Wilcox of Big Bay; daughters, Amy Wilcox of California and Denise (Rusty) Smith of New Zealand; three grandsons, Cameron, Ethaen and Graham; granddaughter, Zared; her two brothers, Earl (Ellen) Walker, Lloyd (Ann) Walker; two sisters, Ruth (Doug) Byers, Lois (Bob) Douglas; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her two four legged companions, Thor and Tomo.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, William and Beulah (Zigler) Walker; and a brother, Eldon (Myra) Walker.
Services for Carol were held at the Fassbender Funeral Home on January 10, 2013. Graveside services will take place in the spring at the Powell Township Cemetery in Big Bay. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Carol’s name to the Bay Cliff Health Camp, P.O. Box 310, Big Bay, Michigan 49808. The Fassbender Funeral Home is assisting the family.
