Redmen win county wrestling meet

GWINN – Behind seven grapplers who won both of their matches, the Marquette Senior High School wrestling team captured the Marquette County Meet championship Wednesday night in Gwinn.

The Redmen dumped Negaunee, 48-12, before defeating Westwood in the championship match, 57-18.

Hunter Moore at 125 pounds and Austin Johnson at 152 won both of their matches by pins.

Teammates Joe Iwanicki at 215 and Rainger Rossway at 285 also went 2-0 with one pin apiece.

Other Redmen who won both of their bouts were Brian Helmer at 140, Ethan Locke at 145 and Curt Calovecchi at 171.

“It was good for the kids to come out and do well after a relatively tough schedule the last three weeks,” MSHS assistant coach Tony Gentz said.

“The wrestled with confidence and a lot of intensity on the entire team’s part.

“I was real pleased with Helmer,” Gentz added, “not only that he had two wins, but both were by pins. It was good to see how well he wrestled.”

Westwood beat Ishpeming, 54-27, in its other match of the night.

Patriots Brett Rautio at 112, Shawn McIntyre at 119 and Vince Carlson at 130 all went 2-0 on the night with a pin.

“Marquette’s tough,” Westwood coach Dan Carlson said. “We lost a lot of matches there that could have gone either way.

“Marquette just had too much experience.”

He noted Patriot Cole Schultz at 189 lost to Marquette’s Calovecchi 11-8.

“That was a real good match, one of the best of the night,” Carlson said.

“We had a good performance out of our young wrestlers. They came through, especially against Ishpeming.”
