Ina Sophia Wuorenmaa

ISHPEMING, Mich. – Ina Sophia Wuorenmaa, age 98 of “Big Perch Lake”, Ishpeming passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 5, 2013 after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family.

Ina was born in Ishpeming on October 7, 1914 to the late Helmie and Ernest Korpi. Beloved wife of the late Leo O. Wuorenmaa and loving mother of the late Dorothy Marietti of Ishpeming. Ina is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Carol and Michael Speer of Newton, MA; Son-in-law Paul Marietti of Ishpeming; Grandchildren Scott Marietti of Ishpeming, Denise and her husband Joseph Morse of Medford, MA., Craig and his wife Teresa Marietti of Ishpeming and Christine and her husband Eric Roth of Natick, MA; Great-grandchildren Joshua Marietti and his wife Elizabeth of Glendale, Arizona, Jason Marietti and Natasha Lancour of Ishpeming, Spencer Marietti and his wife Melissa of Champion, Shayna and her husband Frank Sundberg of Ishpeming, Matthew and Andrew Morse of Medford, MA and Michael Roth of Natick, MA. Great-great grandmother of Addisyn Sundberg of Ishpeming and Espen Marietti of Phoenix, Arizona. Also survived by step-sister Laila (Mustamaa) Maze of Marquette, sister-in-law, Elizabeth and her husband Frank Buytaert and brother-in-law Paul and his wife Audrey Wuorenmaa, both of Ishpeming and many nieces and nephews. Ina was preceded in death by her sister, Henni Lampi, brothers William, John, Albert, Sulo, Reino and Roy Korpi and step sister, Aileen “Ali” Aho and step-brothers, Arne, George, Lauri, Carlo, Eino, Elmer and John “Vic” Mustamaa.

At the age of 15, in order to help with the family’s finances, Ina went to work at Morgan Heights TB Sanitarium in the Children’s Unit, helping with the care of the children, serving meals, etc. During World War II, Ina worked in Bremerton, WA at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a drill press operator, repairing damage to ships of the US fleet and those of its allies. For several years she worked as a waitress/cook at the American Cafe in Ishpeming; a cook in Temiskaming, Quebec, Canada at the Beauchene Fish and Game Club and worked for several years at the McCormick Estate in Champion.

Ina’s hobbies were knitting, crocheting, reading, playing cards, going to the casino, playing cribbage and doing crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed her yearly trips to Massachusetts visiting her family.

Honorary pallbearers are Ina’s Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Thursday, January 10, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Reverend Lauri O. Maki officiating.

A luncheon will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church fellowship hall following the service.
