Redmen edged 2-1

MARQUETTE – Mark Baker scored his second goal of the game midway through the third period to break a tie and give Novi a 2-1 victory over Marquette in a high school hockey game played at Lakeview Arena on Sunday.

It marked the Redmen’s third game in three days against non-Upper Peninsula opposition at home, all losses as MSHS fell to 2-8 this season.

“We played better in all three periods,” Marquette coach Mike L’Huillier said after the Redmen lost to DePere, Wis., 8-2 on Saturday, and 2-1 in overtime to Grosse Pointe North on Friday.

“We won a lot more battle on the boards, which created scoring opportunities.

“I’m proud of our team’s overall performance and positive attitude this weekend.”

Baker opened the scoring with a goal 3:13 into the second period exactly 10 seconds after his team had been shorthanded.

That goal held up until the third period, when Marquette’s Cam Place tied it 1-1 just 1:38 in on a goal assisted by Cam Verigin.

Then Baker netted the game-winner just about nine minutes later, three seconds after a Novi power play expired.

The Redmen’s Evan Kyle made 23 saves, including all 11 shots he faced in the opening period, while Novi counterpart Austin Petty was called on to stop 29 shots.

Marquette remains at home to play Kingsford at 7 p.m. Thursday.
