Redmen stumble on ice

MARQUETTE – Unable to stop De Pere (Wis.) High School’s offense, the Marquette Senior High School hockey Redmen lost to the visiting Redbirds Saturday, 8-2.

Forest Folker and Scott Frazier notched first period goals for MSHS, but the Redmen still fell to 2-7 on the season.

“We looked tired,” MSHS head coach Mike L’Huillier said.

“Maybe we put too much into (Friday night’s) game (a 2-1 overtime loss to Grosse Point North).

“The work ethic wasn’t there and our passes were off.”

The Redmen trailed but 3-2 after the first period, but De Pere’s Matt Willems scored just 11 seconds into the second stanza and the visitors cruised from there.

“We just collapsed in the second period and couldn’t recover,” L’Huillier said. “We started to panic early and lost control.”

Robert Neuwirth scored three goals for De Pere. Emmett Kulick added two markers.

De Pere goalie Bennett Berg made 10 saves; Ethan Wiese (8) and Evan Kyle (18) came up with a combined 26 stops for the Redmen.

In an earlier game in Marquette Saturday, Grosse Point North stopped De Pere, 5-2.
